Find Out How Rich You Are On Global Rich List

Ever wonder how rich you are? Or more reasonably put, how your income compares to that of everyone else in the world? Just how rich is rich, and how poor is poor? With Global Rich List, you can find out exactly how you compare to the rest of the world.

The Global Rich List: Your Buying Power in Context

I was surprised to learn that even with my (comparatively) meager income (I fall well under the official US poverty threshold), I still rank within the top 15% of the world’s most wealthy people. These enlightening statistics from Global Rich List should give you some indication of what money can buy, depending on where you live:

  • $8 could buy you 15 organic apples OR 25 fruit trees for farmers in Honduras to grow and sell fruit at their local market.
  • $30 could buy you an ER DVD Boxset OR a First Aid kit for a village in Haiti.
  • $73 could buy you a new mobile phone OR a new mobile health clinic to care for AIDS orphans in Uganda.
  • $2400 could buy you a second generation High Definition TV OR schooling for an entire generation of school children in an Angolan village.

Inputting different annual incomes is an interesting experiment: I discovered that an annual income of $75,000 is in the top 0.82%! An even higher income of $1,000,000 puts you in the top 0.001%. Incredibly enough, 50% of the world’s population lives on less than $850 per year.

Global Rich List is a great tool to demonstrate the disparity of wealth across the globe.

These facts are all great about how much you donate and what can come of it, but any idea on where they got this data from? I’m sure there are plenty of us readers that would like to know of a place to donate to that would generate these results.
