Five for Friday: Great Green Blog Posts for the Week (8/20/10)

Need a sitter for your backyard chickens while your away? That and more at Five for Friday…

Some time back in an Earth & Industry podcast, I said that I hoped news of the BP oil spill wouldn’t go away once the hole was plugged… there would clearly be stories related to this disaster for years to come. Now that the hole is plugged, the green blogosphere seems to be doing a pretty good job on that front… “Gulf of Mexico” is still on top of Regator’s Environmentalism page, and the stories indexed under that term largely focus on questioning the claims coming from BP and the government that “all’s well” now… good job, green bloggers!

But, of course, it’s not all doom and gloom… still lots of content out there to help you green your own life, and to see what others (individuals, businesses, and non-profits) are doing to become more sustainable. So, let’s get into it…

The Week’s Five for Friday: Green Blog Posts We Liked

  1. Keep an eye on your shrimp: Shrimping has returned to the Louisiana Gulf Coast… and that’s great news for those who make their living this way. But no doubt the “brand” is tainted, and you may be tempted to go with any shrimp that wasn’t caught in the Gulf. Jeannie Moulton at Eat.Drink.Better has some tips for safe shrimp shopping
  2. Debunking the 1998 myth: Had a climate change skeptic tell you that 1998 is the warmest year on record? Physicist John Cook demonstrates the fallacies underlying this argument at Climate Progress.
  3. Hen sitters: Lots of people doing the backyard chickens thing… but what do you do about the birds if you’re going away for a few days (or longer)? Springwise features Portland, Oregon-based Just Us Hens, a “chicken sitting” service…
  4. Take care where you hang that clothesline: Another great “Hank D and the Bee” cartoon from artist, blogger, and fellow St. Louisan Joe Mohr at Eco Child’s Play.
  5. Business do-gooders: Green Marketing TV profiles the non-profit organization MBAs without Borders, which matches experienced volunteer business people with social enterprises in the developing world.

If you found something cool that didn’t make our five (and you must have), share it with us…

Love the clothesline cartoon! I wonder more about squirrels than birds, but haven’t really had a problem in all the years I’ve been line drying.
