Another “Peak Oil” Movie

Busy day today (it’s almost midterms), so I haven’t had a chance to do my usual thorough scouring of the blogs and wires. I did, however, find this post from yesterday on The Oil Drum interesting. From ianqui:

Last night I saw a trailer for the movie Syriana. Much like The Deal and Oil Storm before it, Syriana is a movie in which bad things happen as a result of fuel shortages. Unlike those two movies, however, Syriana is a big budget Warner Brothers film starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright, Chris Cooper and a bunch of other big names.

Perhaps more interesting than the movie itself is the fact that it’s affilated with a new movie production company called Participant Productions, which also brings us the website Participate.net.

Paticipate.net, for those of you who haven’t yet been there, is a site dedicated to bringing together “activists, moviegoers, filmmakers and issue experts.” Whaddaya think? Is this a way to bring attention to issues like peak oil (which certainly has received some media coverage) and get people talking? Or, as ianqui wonders, are Hollywood films the wrong vehicles for inspiring real change?

Gotta go — one more class. Talk amongst yourselves…
