Conservation Through Private Action

It’s pretty rare that I find something on the Commons blog that I agree with at all, but Jonathan Adler’s post on the new report Conservation through Private Initiative: Harnessing Amerian Ingenuity to Preserve Our Nation’s Resources may point to some issues on which the red and blue sides of the environmental movement could find some common ground. Generally, I tend to agree with the idea that thoughtful private action can be more productive than government regulation; I still believe, though, that government should be setting the measurement standards in its role as protector of the commons. While there are certainly very ineffective and totally counterproductive regulations on the books, private action has to occur within a framework that doesn’t allow the profit motive to overtake public interests. Thanks to Jacqui at Enviropundit for pointing me to this one…
