Normally, I’m pretty positive about wind power developments, but this announcement from the Bureau of Land Management left me a bit conflicted. On the one hand, it’s great to see at least one division of the federal government embracing wind power; on the other, though, this has feel of the federal land giveaway to the oil and gas companies recently. I’m always a bit skeptical when I read about “expediting permits” from our current government… I will say (in case this comes up) that I don’t think this is in the same league with the Cape Wind Project in the Northeast — that’s a single project, while this opens up all BLM land to a quick permitting process. I certainly don’t want to see more of the same kinds of issues that have arisen around the Altamont Pass wind farm.
