According to Planet Ark – an Australian not-for-profit environmental agency – in 2005 alone, more than 18 million printer cartridges were discarded. As you can see in the infographic below, the majority of printer cartridge e-waste comes from residential dwellings; and that the waste disposal bins provided for these dwellings are not equipped for recycling of e-waste.
This has been a major cause of concern for Simon Williams, the managing director of Australian online printer cartridge retailer Cartridges Direct. Mr Williams states in this article:
This is a staggering statistic, especially when you consider that the polymers used to make printer cartridges can take around 1000 years to decompose, all the while leaking dangerous toxins into the environment.
