Take an Off-Grid Vacation in Mexico

Kevin Humphrey at Unplugged Living has started a new feature called Off-the-Grid Vacations which focuses on “…actual resorts, hotels, etc that are completely energy self-sufficient.”

The first subject, Mexico’s Hotelito Desconocido, is now officially on my list of “dream vacations”:

‘Hotelito‘ generates it own power via solar means and that’s only used for indispensable resort needs like hot water and refrigeration. At night, the rooms and restaurant are lit by hundreds of candles and luminaries light the pathways that meander throughout the property. Beyond that, guests are left off-the-grid to enjoy some true downtime.

Amenities like creams and such are 100% natural, the water comes from a neighbouring estuary, and the food is prepared with fruits and vegetables grown in their own organic garden. The owner and founder, Marcello Murzilli, explains his philosophy as…”Hotelito was created for the new millennium. In every aspect, it speaks of change, and of taking care of nature.”

I took a look at the resort’s website for more information, and was impressed with what I found. While Hotelito may be a bit pricey for many travelers, they certainly provide their guests with true luxury treatment. The “Full Eco-Luxury Plan” includes

Accomodation in a palafito for 8 days and 7 nights
Last night complementary
All meals
Transfer to / from Puerto Vallarta
Use of the Spa, steam room with aromatic herbs
One relaxing massage per guest per stay
One refreshing facial per guest per stay
One sea mud foot massage per stay
Romantic, private candlelight dinner on a floating dock in the middle of the estuary
Bottle of imported wine
Tour & Picnic to our top secret beach “Peñitas”

Horseback riding
Bird watching tours
Mountain Biking
Turtles liberation (June to December).

I suppose I shouldn’t be thinking too hard about vacations since I’m job-hunting (which, btw, is going well), but, wow, this place sure looks like an ideal spot for genuinely eco-friendly downtime…
