The Reports of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated…

OK, nobody said I died, and I likely butchered that Twain quote, which may get me in trouble with the wife… But no comas, honest (although claims of a massive hangover are much closer to the truth)…

But, it’s time to get back to blogging… Interesting news from WorldChanging and TriplePundit on the growth of organic farming in China. Both point to an article in the Beijing City Weekend (which I’m having a hell of a time pulling up), and Jamais adds further statistics on the growth of organics in China, as well as some problems with certification. Despite these problems, though, it’s good to see one of the world’s fastest-growing economies (with its subsequent growing demand for energy) engaging in some forms of sustainable development. This looks quite different from Cuba’s wholesale shift to organic agriculture, and neither seems to support the potential claim that Communist countries socieities are more naturally suited to environmental endeavors (in fact, Communist countries saw some of the ugliest environmental degradation). As China’s looks like a response to market demand, it’s good to see that as they adopt more capitalism, they’re not moving completely in the direction of slashing-and-burning to make a buck…
