No, no, this is not some lame safe-sex joke… Rather, news from the alt-weekly Boston Phoenix on how the US Northeast’s ambitious plans for addressing global warming and carbon emissions have yet to bear much fruit. Without a doubt, this region and the Pacific coast are light years ahead of the rest of us in terms of considering these questions, and as writer Deirdre Fulton notes, the New England Climate Coalition “…is halfway to its 2010 milepost…” But:
[the region] continues to devour more, not less, of the fossil fuels that contribute to global-warming emissions. Oil consumption for residential heating jumped three percent since 2001, gasoline use is up almost nine percent, and natural-gas consumption for electric power generation rose more than 26 percent. Massachusetts commuters, generators, and power plants contributed a full 45 percent of the entire region’s emissions.
