{"id":1161,"date":"2005-05-13T15:22:00","date_gmt":"2005-05-13T15:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainablog.greenoptions.com\/2005\/05\/13\/dirty-air-and-national-security\/"},"modified":"2005-05-13T15:22:00","modified_gmt":"2005-05-13T15:22:00","slug":"dirty-air-and-national-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/articles\/dirty-air-and-national-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Dirty Air and National Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been all over the wires and blogosphere that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preemptivekarma.com\/archives\/2005\/05\/if_we_drink_cle.html\">the Department of Defense (with support of their lackies in the White House) is seeking yet another waiver of environmental laws<\/a>, but PK&#8217;s headline (&#8220;If we drink clean water, the terrorists win&#8221;) gets my nod for most clever take on the issue.  It&#8217;s really interesting to see the rift developing on the right over environmental and sustainability issues: on one hand, the economic conservatives and even the neo-conservatives seem to be coming to a realization of the need to address environmental woes, even labeling them as national security issues; on the other hand, the military seems to believe that dumping toxins wherever it pleases is essential to our defense.
