{"id":1217,"date":"2005-05-30T18:20:00","date_gmt":"2005-05-30T18:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainablog.greenoptions.com\/2005\/05\/30\/saving-our-souls\/"},"modified":"2005-05-30T18:20:00","modified_gmt":"2005-05-30T18:20:00","slug":"saving-our-souls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/articles\/saving-our-souls\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving Our Souls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in the last post, the Sustainable Blogosphere&#8217;s been busy over the last few days, but one particular item stood out for me:  the publication of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/comments\/soapbox\/2005\/05\/27\/gelobter-soul\/index1.html\">&#8220;The Soul of Environmentalism: Rediscovering Transformational Politics in the 21st century.&#8221;<\/a>  This paper is largely a response to last Fall&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebreakthrough.org\/images\/Death_of_Environmentalism.pdf\">&#8220;The Death of Environmentalism,&#8221;<\/a> and I&#8217;m proud to now realize that one of it&#8217;s authors, Michael Dorsey, gave us <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablog.blogspot.com\/2005\/03\/michael-k-dorsey-responds.html\">a preview<\/a> of it here at sustainablog.  &#8220;Soul&#8221; agrees with many points brought up in &#8220;Death,&#8221; but ultimately argues that environmentalism can&#8217;t simply settle for joining a vaguely-defined &#8220;progressive movement.&#8221;  Rather, it has to reach back to its more transformational and, dare I say, radical roots in the Civil Rights movement as well as other movements for liberation in the &#8217;60s and &#8217;70s. We have to (re)find our common ground with movements for reproductive rights, gay rights and economic justice.
