This one’s all over the wires and the sustainable and political blogospheres: “Ex-oil lobbyist watered down US climate research<\/strong><\/a>.” I know, I know — what a shocker! 1) The chief of staff for the White House council on environmental quality Phillip Cooney was formerly a lobbyist for the American Petroleum Institute<\/a>. 2) He “edited” reports on the links between greenhouse gases and global warming to play down the connection. 3) He “consulted” with the Competitive Enterprise Institute<\/a> on his “revisions.” In response, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said “Nothing to see here folks. And by the way, did you know Bill Clinton had sexual relations with a White House intern…?”<\/p>\n On a similar note<\/a> (via Compostlandia<\/a>),<\/p>\n President’s George Bush’s decision not to sign the United States up to the Kyoto global warming treaty was partly a result of pressure from ExxonMobil, the world’s most powerful oil company, and other industries, according to US State Department papers seen by the Guardian.<\/p>\n The documents, which emerged as Tony Blair visited the White House for discussions on climate change before next month’s G8 meeting, reinforce widely-held suspicions of how close the company is to the administration and its role in helping to formulate US policy. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n In response, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, “Nothing to see here folks.
