{"id":1402,"date":"2005-07-11T18:24:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-11T18:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainablog.greenoptions.com\/2005\/07\/11\/brc-12-bikes-to-the-rescue\/"},"modified":"2005-07-11T18:24:00","modified_gmt":"2005-07-11T18:24:00","slug":"brc-12-bikes-to-the-rescue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/articles\/brc-12-bikes-to-the-rescue\/","title":{"rendered":"BRC 12: Bikes to the Rescue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From BikeBiz.com via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.triplepundit.com\/pages\/local-bikes-to-help-posttsunam-001316.php\">TriplePundit<\/a>, SRAM and Trek are providing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bikebiz.co.uk\/daily-news\/article.php?id=5751\">a sustainable way for Sri Lankans affected by last winter&#8217;s tsunami to become mobile again<\/a>: a &#8220;bicycle provision program, &#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbicyclerelief.org\/tsunami\/index.php\">Project Tsunami<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The program will provide 18 335 adult bikes for &#8220;greater access to jobs, commerce, food and medicine, and independence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>6041 children&#8217;s bikes will be provided for &#8220;commutes to school, help with supporting the family, fun, play, and healing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The bikes will be sourced locally to &#8220;ensure correct specification and that recipients are familiar with bikes. It also provides access to spare parts, eliminates supply chain, shipping costs, duties, logistics, and assists the local economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>World Bicycle Relief will also &#8220;train and equip selected individuals in bicycle maintenance. This creates and professionalizes jobs, and ensures a sustainable bicycle community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>World Bicycle Relief believes that bicycles can provide the basis for personal independence and mobility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By providing bicycles to those most impacted by the tsunami, we are providing them with a key to rebuilding their lives, their livelihood and their communities.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is great.  &#8220;Returning refugees to independence and livelihood&#8221;
