A pop-up boutique, \u201cshwop\u201d (shop + swap) and style event and online contests are some of the fun goodies to accompany\u00a0New Zealand\u2019s (NZ) first ever eco-fashion runway show, ‘Exposed’,<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday, September 21. While the country hosts three other fashion weeks, this will be opening night for ten sustainable designers as they come together to present original looks made completely from organic and upcycled materials.<\/p>\n

Fellow designer and the show\u2019s co-founder\u00a0Denise Anglesey<\/a>\u00a0and her husband Vinnie hope the day will be a significant step towards establishing a platform for designers, buyers and fashionistas to access ethically-produced and fair trade materials, manufacturing options and trend-setting styles. The couple also envisions \u2018Exposed\u2019 growing into a full eco fashion week and a hub for industry leaders to network, host workshops and seminars for educational\u00a0purposes and assist in developing an international export market.<\/p>\n

In the midst of completing on a long list of preparations for her collection\u2019s debut, Denise took a few moments to share with me the inside scoop about the day\u2019s events and why she thinks New Zealanders are ready for\u00a0more sustainable apparel<\/a>\u00a0in their wardrobes\u2019.<\/p>\n

  1. A small island known for having more sheep than people, NZ is popular for its wool. All\u00a0organic cotton<\/a>\u00a0or silks must be imported in or sourced directly via Fair Trade avenues for environmentally-conscious designers.<\/li>\n
  2. \u2018Exposed\u2019 will be held at a performing arts center in the island\u2019s capital city of Wellington. The 180,000 residents who call it home nicknamed it\u00a0\u2018Windy Wellington\u2019<\/a>\u00a0for its extremely windy days.<\/li>\n
  3. Four of the ten presenting designers,\u00a0Heke\u00a0Design,\u00a0Se\u00f1orita\u00a0AweSUMO, Dear Prudence and Denise H<\/a>,\u00a0are using reclaimed fabrics from thrift stores or discarded factory waste to create their collections. Denise, for instance, worked the design of her looks around salvaging 50 pairs of jeans from going into the landfill.<\/li>\n
  4. ‘Sustainable Style’ Model, Hannah\u00a0Pasene,\u00a0is native of Wainuiomata, NZ and enjoys singing and dancing, as stated on the\u00a0show\u2019s blog<\/a>. She\u2019s pictured in the images accompanying this posting.<\/li>\n
  5. Several special guests are expected to attend the inaugural runway, including\u00a0Stansborough<\/a>, the creator of the textiles for The Hobbit (film series),\u00a0Miss Humanity International New Zealand, Sarah\u00a0Brodrick,\u00a0and international designer,\u00a0Karishma\u00a0of\u00a0Karishma\u00a0Design<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  6. A new generation of designers from a couple of local\u00a0high schools was\u00a0inspired to create upcycled looks from\u00a0old\u00a0sweatshirts and jeans and will share their designs at the event.<\/li>\n
  7. Personal stylist and self-proclaimed \u201cfashion junkie\u201d Nora Swann from\u00a0Kila’s\u00a0Style<\/a>\u00a0will be available throughout the \u201cshwop\u201d event to teach fashionistas how to create low cost, chic\u00a0looks using only second-hand finds.\u00a0Take a look at her video<\/a>\u00a0to see how Nora transforms a\u00a0guy\u2019s\u00a0threads in under two minutes.<\/li>\n
  8. Share your design skills by joining the\u00a0Exposed Thrift Store Challenge<\/a>\u00a0until September 21; the only requirements for participation are you must love fashion and like to have fun.<\/li>\n

Denise said, \u201cMany people say to me they would prefer to purchase eco-fashions but don’t know where to consistently purchase them. \u00a0I believe this runway event will help to highlight these buying option and show there is really no end to the concept of\u00a0sustainability if we are committed enough to make it happen.\u201d\u00a0I think Denise\u2019s Facebook posting sums it up well, \u201cEco is the IN thing!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
