Hey, we&#8217;re not here to judge, and we&#8217;re pretty certain you don&#8217;t let any of that go to waste. But a whiskey distillery, just like any kind of food processing plant,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/2015\/01\/bioethanol-production-food-waste-instead-food\/\">does produce waste<\/a>, and that material\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gas2.org\/2014\/11\/13\/biofuel-from-whiskey-waste\/\">has to go somewhere<\/a>. You can continue to enjoy that Scotch, though, without guilt: whiskey waste traditionally <a href=\"http:\/\/peakperspective.com\/whisky-wise\/whisky-co-products-the-extra-bits-bobs-part-1\/\">doesn&#8217;t go to the landfill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, that would&#8217;ve been the end of the story, but a group of distillers in Scotland&#8217;s Speyside region figured out something else they could do with the draff, or spent grains: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/john-dewar--sons-helps-power-thousands-of-scottish-homes-300127445.html\">produce energy<\/a>. In partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heliusenergy.com\/\">Helius Energy<\/a>, the 50 distillers created the\u00a0Rothes CoRDe, a facility that produces energy from a combination of draff and wood chips. How much energy?\u00a0&#8220;We generate 8.3 megawatts of electricity every hour of every day. We use some on site and export the rest \u2013 enough for 20,000 people in 8,000 homes,&#8221; explains <span class=\"xn-person\">Frank Burns<\/span>, Managing Director, Rothes CoRDe. &#8220;We are powering all of the local communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean cattle are going hungry, though. In addition to energy, the Rothes facility converts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedsmarketing.co.uk\/pot-ale-syrup\">pot ale<\/a> &#8211; a byproduct of the early stage of distillation &#8211; into feed for cows.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the video above for more insight into this effort to make good use of the waste produced by Scotch production.
