This event grew out of an article in the new issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/\">Vanity Fair<\/a> (you know &#8212; the green issue) by investigative journalist Mark Hertsgaard that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;[details] how Dr. Frederick Seitz, a former president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasonline.org\/site\/PageServer\">National Academy of Sciences<\/a> and one of the most often-quoted skeptics on global warming, was paid over half a million dollars by the tobacco industry to obfuscate the connection between smoking and cancer. Seitz went on to spearhead a campaign to cast scientific doubt about global warming.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to an audio file of the press conference (which included Hertsgaard, <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablog.blogspot.com\/2006\/02\/take-action-against-muzzling-of.html\">Dr. James Hansen<\/a> of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Science, Phil Schiliro, Minority Chief of Staff, House Government Reform Committee, and Philip Clapp, President of the National Environmental Trust), NET has also released<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.net.org\/warming\/docs\/3860_GlobalClimateSciencePlanMemo.pdf\">industry media plan<\/a> to oppose global warming [PDF] \u2014 an April 3, 1998 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=American_Petroleum_Institute\">American Petroleum Institute<\/a> strategy memo on its public relations campaign to plant doubts about global warming science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pretty damning stuff. The speakers at the press conference went to great lengths to show how the plan outlined in the API memo was modeled on the tobacco industry&#8217;s efforts over decades to muddy the science on the health effects of smoking.
