{"id":283,"date":"2004-11-19T14:16:00","date_gmt":"2004-11-19T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainablog.greenoptions.com\/2004\/11\/19\/283\/"},"modified":"2004-11-19T14:16:00","modified_gmt":"2004-11-19T14:16:00","slug":"283","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/articles\/283\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Conservation Commons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From WorldChanging, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldchanging.com\/archives\/001607.html\">a notice<\/a> of an interesting proposal from the World Conservation Union called the &#8220;Conservation Commons Initiative.&#8221; Essentially, the IUCN is proposing &#8220;to build a database of &#8216;fair use&#8217; material specifically to &#8216;improve open access to, and unrestricted use of, data, information, and knowledge related to conservation of biodiversity.&#8217; Organizations involved in the initiative include NGOs (such as the Nature Conservancy, WWF International, Conservation International), government-connected agencies (such as NASA, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Conservation, Chinese Academy of Sciences), and corporate entities (such as Chevron Texaco, Shell International Exploration &amp; Production, Red Hat &#8211; Open Source Affairs).
