Seems as though this idea is catching on. The privately-funded, non-partisan National Commission on Energy Policy has made nonbinding recommendations<\/a> for “greater government involvement in developing new and more environmentally friendly energy sources.” That’s the good news. The bad: they’re also recommending further development of “clean coal” and nuclear power.
