{"id":4364,"date":"2009-04-01T15:09:14","date_gmt":"2009-04-01T21:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress-367309-1145705.cloudwaysapps.com\/?p=4364"},"modified":"2009-04-01T15:09:14","modified_gmt":"2009-04-01T21:09:14","slug":"book-review-the-nations-guide-to-the-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/articles\/book-review-the-nations-guide-to-the-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Review:  The Nation\u2019s Guide to the Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/files\/2009\/04\/guidetonation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4365\" src=\"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/files\/2009\/04\/guidetonation.jpg\" alt=\"The Nation's Guide to the Nation\" width=\"185\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For some people, <em>The Nation\u2019s Guide to the Nation<\/em> by Richard Lingeman and the editors of <em>The Nation<\/em> could be mistaken for a guidebook for \u201cCultural Creatives,\u201d we citizens living in America (and abroad) who deeply care about the environment and fellow humankind, where sustainable living is sensible living.\u00a0 Edited by <em>The Nation<\/em>\u2019s former executive editor, Richard Lingeman, one might even suspect that <em>The Nation\u2019s Guide to the Nation<\/em> is a harbinger of the changes yet to come under the new Barack Obama administration, addressing climate change (finally), human rights and community.\u00a0 It\u2019s no coincidence that the pub date for the guide was Obama\u2019s inauguration date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The Nation&#8217;s Guide to the Nation<\/em>,\u201d writes Victor Navasky and Katrina Vanden Heuvel in the book\u2019s Introduction, \u201cis for and about a community of committed, <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/2008\/07\/31\/turn-your-passion-into-your-green-business\/\">passionate people<\/a> who have active consciences and a lively sense of social justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This guide covers it all, revealing progressive film festivals to exploring the explosive growth of organic and slow food restaurants.\u00a0 By what is included in the listing, the guide examines solutions to our energy crisis (not to mention financial crisis) in ways that do not involve transporting stuff around the world and burning lots of oil.\u00a0 It logs in the latest collection of progressive (and some left-leaning) websites as well as locally owned bookstores that carry what many of the chain stores don&#8217;t.\u00a0 All done with a touch of humor, when necessary.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Broken into five parts &#8212; culture, media, organizations, goods and services, and social connections \u2013 <em>The Nation\u2019s Guide to the Nation<\/em> is an authoritative (if not also eclectic and admittedly arbitrary) resource for places to go, things to try, magazines to read and radio stations to listen to.\u00a0 For example, in the organizations section, learn about the diversity of organizations like the Apollo Alliance, Bioneers, Global Exchange and <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/2009\/03\/11\/dvd-review-coming-home-inspires-a-local-economy-as-if-people-mattered\/\">E.F. Schumacher Society<\/a>, all encouraging creative approaches to solving our present economic woes that don\u2019t involve big business bailouts.<\/p>\n<p>This book is for anyone who wants to reclaim our community, restore the planet and create a lifestyle (and <a href=\"http:\/\/ecopreneurist.com\/2008\/08\/14\/operating-a-small-sustainable-business-resources-for-ecopreneurs\/\">livelihood<\/a>) that is more meaningful and mindful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For some people, The Nation\u2019s Guide to the Nation by Richard Lingeman and the editors of The Nation could be mistaken for a guidebook for \u201cCultural Creatives,\u201d we citizens living&nbsp;[ &hellip;
