{"id":99,"date":"2003-12-23T16:22:00","date_gmt":"2003-12-23T16:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainablog.greenoptions.com\/2003\/12\/23\/99\/"},"modified":"2003-12-23T16:22:00","modified_gmt":"2003-12-23T16:22:00","slug":"99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainablog.org\/articles\/99\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Challenging Sprawl Requires Creativity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;re probably thinking &#8220;Well, duh, Jeff&#8230;&#8221;  Still, this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views03\/1222-03.htm\">review of Vernon Swaback&#8217;s book <em>The Creative Community: Designing for Life<\/a><\/em> argues persuasively (as does the book, apparently) that the byproducts of sprawl, namely a mind-numbing sameness best symbolized by the &#8220;big box store,&#8221; demonstrates the anti-creative urge embodied in this phenomenon.  The writer, Neil Peirce, quotes Swaback as writing &#8220;Future power and fortunes will come to those who can demonstrate relationships between privacy and community, between cities and towns, between nations, and ultimately, between humanity and the Earth&#8221;
