No Need to Waste Energy at Home: How to Improve Your Efficiency [Infographic]

Dreading the coming Winter, and those ugly heating bills that almost always accompany it? Yep, we hear you. On the upside, there are lots of things you can do to ensure that you don’t waste energy at home, and only pay for actual heating of your home’s space (and not the great outdoors). Sure, most of us have cracks and leaks and other elements of our homes’ envelopes that need improving (and many need to be done by a green home retrofit professional), but even the simplest efforts to keep that hot air inside can make a difference.

So, not sure where to get started? This infographic from Shea Homes provides the most basic practices for increasing your home’s energy efficiency. Keep in mind that there’s nothing wrong with starting with the least expensive items on this list: a geothermal system will really only provide a financial bang in an efficient building, and new higher-tech windows never make up for their increased costs with energy savings. Save those big investments for last, after you’ve caulked up the leaks and cracks, installed a better thermostat, and added to your home’s insulation.
