Paper Recycling: All the Facts [Video]

paper recycling

OK, maybe not all the facts, but this new video from the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries provides a lot of information about the impact of paper recycling. So, next time you’re tempted with the thought “Hey, it’s just a sheet of paper – I’ll just toss it in the trash,” consider some of these statistics presented in the video and an accompanying fact sheet:

  • Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space, and 7000 gallons of water.
  • The use of recycled materials saves 68% of the energy used when making paper from virgin materials.
  • Last year, the US recycled 315 pounds of paper, from commercial and residential sources, for each person in the country.
  • Recycled paper was a $7.5 billion industry in the US in 2013.

Lots and lots of environmental and economic benefits, so make sure that sheet of paper, newspaper, magazine, etc., goes in the blue bin at home. This video is one of the first in ISRI’s series on recyclable commodities; they’ve also release one on ferrous metals (any magnetic metals that contain iron… like steel).
