From the UK’s Independent via EcoPortal, news of the Brits’ latest change in agricultural policy: subsidies based on “environmental protection and [enhancement] work on their land.” Apparently, this is not the first time that such a plan has been tried in Britain, but this newest version may be more successful because it “is open to every farmer, and every farmer will be encouraged to take part.” While I’m sure this plan won’t appeal to our “free market environmentalist” friends, it’s definitely light years ahead of older production-based models (such as we still have in the US)…
