How to Really Celebrate Earth Hour Every Day [Infographic]

I’ve got a confession to make: I’ve lost my enthusiasm for Earth Hour (which is tonight). I’m not alone: I’ve seen many of my fellow green bloggers expressing everything from low motivation to outright disdain for the notion of turning off your lights for an hour at a specified time. I can’t speak for everyone, of course, but I’d guess that these feelings largely stem from the conviction that Earth Hour really doesn’t accomplish a whole lot than making people feel good about “doing something for the environment” during this one hour… and then going back to normal behavior afterwards.

I think that’s a legitimate concern – I’d guess most people do turn off their lights for more than an hour a day. Maybe it’s time to rethink what we do during Earth Hour. Rather than turning off the lights, how about turning off one of the most quickly growing sources of energy consumption: our gadgets.

Yes, we all have phones; most of us have computers and tablets, also. What if we used Earth Hour Β as a way to get people to start turning these gadgets off (rather than leaving them in sleep mode). Or unplugging their chargers (which continue to pull juice even when they’re not charging a device)? A collective effort to get this behavior started could make a difference in our energy consumption… and, perhaps, get us looking for other energy drains in our homes. Isn’t that what Earth Hour was meant to do originally?

Take a look at the infographic below, and consider how you could cut your own power consumption by powering off devices you let idle. Got thoughts or ideas? Share them in the comments below.
