Senate Votes to Increase CAFE Standards… Sort of…

Green Car Congress has another run-down of action in the Senate related to the energy bill. The news that the Senate approved Missouri Senator Kit Bond’s amendment that “proposed CAFE increases based on ‘maximum feasible average fuel economy levels,’ factoring in a number of considerations including economics and the competitive positions of manufacturers” is hopeful, but then they voted down an amendment by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin that put some actual figures on CAFE increases. I think it’s safe to remain skeptical at this point, although it’s good to see them actually considering CAFE increases, as there’s likely not a more immediate step we can take to reduce our dependence on oil.
